FRIENDS FOREVER MEET – SEPTEMBER 2022
On 10th of September 2022- we conducted our monthly meeting of ‘Friend’s Forever’. This time we had a very special guests, Dr. Martha Koch- Editor-in-Chief of the prestigious journal the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and Dr Parizad Avari, an Honorary clinical researcher at Imperial College, London.
We started our session with the formal introduction by Dr Amutha. This was followed by an interactive session with Mr Prashanth, Mr Lakshminarayan and Mr Sridhar, who are also people with type 1 diabetes. They adressed specifically the issue of dosage adjustments as per the requirements on one’s sugar values. Parents were specifically taught to avoid giving fixed doses of insulin to their children. Prashant also spoke on adjustments of basal dose and the importance of self monitoring of blood glucose, atleast 3-5 times a day.
Mr Prashanth, Mr Lakshminarayan and Mr Sridhar spoke about their life experiences and their journey towards achieving good glycaemic control. All three of them maintain Hba1c’s in the range of 5.6-7.0% for the past several years; which is very creditable, they all take multiple doses of insulin throughout the day. As many children are not comfortable taking multiple doses, specifically taught the need of taking multiple injection and showed that it wasnot harmful for the body.
Factors affecting the post meal rise in blood glucose were also discussed by Ms.Jaishree, Manager, Dietitian and Certified Type 1 Diabetes Educator and Ms.Aiswarya, Senior Dietitian, and Certified Type 1 Diabetes Educator. Basics of carb counting were also taught to the children in most simplified way which helped them to understand the subject easily.
Dr Martha Koch and Dr Parizad were extremely happy with the session and appreciated the effort taken for educating children with Type 1 diabetes. They wished the children good luck and a healthy future. The meeting concluded with a group photograph.
The children and their parents thoroughly enjoyed and said that the session was an eye opener for them in many ways.
