Education for Parents and Children

When it comes to type 1 diabetes or neonatal diabetes, it’s often the parent who needs more training, counselling and education regarding the disease. The family as a whole needs to pitch in to share the duty of taking care of a toddler, a teenager, a young adult. with insulin deficiency. Every stage in life comes with its own set of challenges which may be amplified in case of a child with type 1 diabetes, the primary challenge being the intake of food.  Since diabetes is a condition that occurs due to the increase of glucose levels in the blood, the ingestion – digestion – assimilation of carbohydrates needs to be closely monitored by the parent during childhood and thereafter by the patients themselves as they get more independent. The process of carb counting and adjusting the dosage of insulin carefully to tread the thin line between the ideal glucose level and extreme low or high glucose level is a process of learning and experience. More insulin and less intake may lead to hypoglycemia (low glucose levels). Inversely, less insulin and more intake may lead to diabetic ketoacidosis (Increase in ketones due to high glucose levels). Both can precipitate to life threatening episodes. Since both the conditions may mimic each other with the person with diabetes feeling dizzy, nauseous or faint, the caretakers need to be vigilant of the intake and insulin dosages and to know how to differentiate between the two as the treatment is quite different. Puberty, sports activities, simple infections, may need to be handled with extra care for individuals with Type 1 diabetes. Due to the precautions that need to be observed by the parents, we at Dr Mohan’s make sure that they are properly educated about all the different aspects of the condition. As in families of low socio-economic status, the children may also suffer from neglect and may not receive adequate care and medication, the parents are forewarned about the potential complications of neglect. Awareness sessions are undertaken to dispel discrimination or apathy in the social setup.
