The twin epidemic of diabetes and obesity is increasing at alarming proportions in India. Currently India has 62 million people with diabetes and unless proper steps are taken, this number might exceed 100 million in the next couple of decades. The seeds for diabetes particularly obesity and physical inactivity are sown in childhood. Hence if the diabetes epidemic has to be tackled effectively, there needs to be a concerted effort aimed at preventing obesity in school and college children.
When programs are organized for diabetes awareness, usually only people with diabetes tend to attend them and the messages do not reach school and college children. With this in mind, Dr. Mohan’s Diabetes Specialities Centre, organizes a range of diabetes themed art and cultural competitions for school and college students with Celebrity participation. Several renowned personalities like Sir Michael Hirst (President, International Diabetes Federation), K. Pandiarajan (Indian businessman and politician from Tamil Nadu), Dr. Radha Krishan (IAS), Mr. Wasim Akram (Former Pakistan Cricket Captain), Mr. Lakshmipathi Balaji (Former Indian Cricketer), Mr. Srikanth Deva (Music Director), The following actors have participated enthusiastically and supported the cause, Mr. Y G. Mahendran, Ms. Suhasini Manirathnam, Ms. Revathi, Ms. Gowthami, Mr. Prashant, Mr. Jeeva, Mr. Arun Vijay, Mr. Ramesh Khanna, Mr. Anandraj, Mr. Pandiraj, Mr. Banuchandar, Mr. Mahendran, Mr. Roboshankar, and many others have participated and endorsed the theme of the events, namely DIABETES and OBESITY PREVENTION.
